DC-DC Step-Up Converter Guide

A step-up converter takes a lower DC voltage and delivers a higher one. The boost category on this site lists six options, from 12 volts to 19 volts up to 24 volts to 48 volts. The principle is the same across all of them: energy is stored briefly and released at a higher voltage, so the output voltage rises while the output current falls relative to the input current.

The sizing rule follows directly from that principle. Power is conserved, so the input current is higher than the output current by roughly the step ratio, before conversion losses. A 12 to 48 volt converter delivering 5 amps at 48 volts draws roughly 20 amps at 12 volts, plus losses. The input wiring, the fuse, and the source battery must all be sized for that figure. A step-up converter that is correctly rated on its output side but starved on its input side will not deliver, and the failure will look like a converter fault when it is actually a circuit sizing fault.

Step-up conversion suits systems where the source is fixed and low, such as a vehicle battery, but the load is built for a higher standard voltage. Before ordering, state the output current and the source capacity in the inquiry, and confirm quantity, price and delivery time. Certificates are available upon request.
